Small cell lung cancer is one of the most aggressive types of cancer, and in a recent study statins, a class of drugs primarily used to lower cholesterol in patients at risk for heart disease, appeared to provide an increase in overall survival for those cancer patients who received them.

This study specifically examined late-stage SCLC patients who were prescribed statins, aspirin, clomipramine or serotonin reuptake inhibitors (antidepressants), and doxazosin or prazosin (medications for high blood pressure). Significantly, their analyses appeared to show no statistical benefit for SCLC cancer patients taking any of those medications, except for statins.
