Gerontology, or the study of aging, is a field that greatly benefits from device repurposing research. Scientists often struggle to complete drug tests on live subjects, leading to long and costly products. However, Insilico Medicine, based at the Emerging Technology Centers at the Johns Hopkins University, has come up with a big data based software called the Geroscope™ to examine the effectiveness of geroprotective (also called anti-aging) drugs. The Geroscope™ initally selected 5 drugs with potential geroprotective properties. After further studies, one of these drug and its compounds have been tested on a live subject and shown Geroprotective action. The Geroscope™ has also been used in preventative photoaging research-studies that are working to reverse the effects of sunlight overexposure. Scientists anticipate this platform will be used to integrate geroprotectors into photoaging treatments like sunscreen.
